TL;DR: Non-illuminated bathroom mirrors are mirrors with no built-in lights or wiring, and they are the simplest, lowest-cost choice for over a basin; ours start at £69, compared with £320 for our lowest-priced illuminated mirror, including VAT at the time of writing.
- No wiring means no electrician is needed for the mirror itself.
- Pair an unlit mirror with wall lights either side for even, shadow-free light on your face.
- Choose a mirror no wider than your basin or vanity unit, and hang it with the centre at about eye height.
- Look for bathroom-suitable glass, such as the copper-free, lead-free glass on our Origins Living Slim, Oslo and Tate mirrors.
- We sell small, large, long, narrow, round and arched shapes, frameless or framed.
Non-illuminated bathroom mirrors are mirrors with no built-in lighting, so they need no wiring and cost less than LED mirrors: ours start at £69, while our lowest-priced illuminated mirror is £320, including VAT at the time of writing. They are a good choice whenever you want a particular shape or frame, or you already have good lighting in the room.
This guide covers why you might choose an unlit mirror, the shapes and frames available, how to size one to your basin, and how to keep it looking good in a damp room.
Why choose a bathroom mirror without lights?
- Cost. An unlit mirror usually costs far less than a lit mirror of a similar size and style, and there is no electrician's bill to connect it.
- Style. Without LEDs to house, the frame can be anything from a hairline metal edge to a wide bevel or a painted timber surround.
- No wiring. You can hang it on any suitable wall, move it later, or change it without touching the electrics. That makes it a simple update for an existing bathroom.
- Better light, if planned well. A ceiling light on its own casts shadows under your eyes and chin. Wall lights either side of an unlit mirror, at about face height, light your face evenly. Bathroom lights need the right IP rating for their zone and should be fitted by a qualified electrician.
If you would like the lighting built in, our illuminated bathroom mirror guide explains how LED mirrors work and what they cost to fit.

Small bathroom mirrors and cloakroom mirrors
In a cloakroom or en suite, the basin is often 500mm wide or less, so the mirror needs to be small too. The Brix Rectangular Mirror is a frameless mirror with a polished edge, from £69 for 30 x 45cm. The Ledge Rectangular Mirror adds a removable glass shelf, which is useful when there is no room for a cabinet. You will find more in our small bathroom mirrors range.
Large bathroom mirrors without lights
A large mirror makes a bathroom feel brighter and more open, because it reflects light from windows and fittings. The frameless Slim Rectangular Mirror comes in eight sizes, from 50 x 65cm at £99 up to 120 x 60cm at £195. For a framed extra large rectangular bathroom mirror, the Tate Rectangular Mirror has a slim aluminium frame in black, chrome or white, from £240 for 60 x 80cm up to £420 for 140 x 70cm. See more in our large bathroom mirrors collection.
Many of our rectangular mirrors can hang portrait or landscape, so a long landscape mirror can run across a double vanity, while a narrow portrait mirror suits a slim wall or the gap between two basins.
Frames and finishes
- Frameless. Clean and modern. The Slim, Brix and Gala ranges have polished or plain edges, and the Belvoir has a slim bevel.
- Bevelled glass. The Porterhouse range has a wide bevelled edge on 6mm glass, a good fit for a traditional bathroom.
- Metal frames. The Oslo, Delphine and Docklands ranges have stainless steel frames in finishes such as black, brushed brass, brushed bronze and brushed nickel, so you can match your taps.
- Traditional framed. The Imperial Tristan Framed Mirror comes in chrome, antique gold, polished nickel, brushed nickel and brushed brass, from £895, and the Carlyon Bay Round Mirror has a painted wooden frame, at £445.
Our guide to bathroom tap finishes will help you match a metal frame to your brassware.
How to size a mirror to your basin or vanity
- Width. Keep the mirror no wider than the basin or vanity unit below, or a little narrower. A 600mm basin suits a mirror 50 to 60cm wide.
- Double vanities. Use one wide landscape mirror across both basins, or two matching mirrors, one centred over each.
- Height. Hang it so the centre sits at about eye height for the main users, and so the tallest person can see the top of their head.
- Clearance. Leave a gap above the tap or splashback so the mirror is easy to clean and not constantly splashed.
Moisture: keeping a mirror looking good
Steam and splashes can damage the silvering on the back of cheap mirrors, causing dark marks that creep in from the edges. Origins Living ranges such as Slim, Belvoir, Oslo, Docklands and Tate use 4mm copper-free, lead-free glass, and the Porterhouse range uses 6mm. Copper-free silvering is made to cope better in damp rooms. To help any mirror last:
- Run an extractor fan during and after a bath or shower.
- Wipe water off the bottom edge rather than leaving it to sit.
- Clean with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive glass cleaner, and avoid spraying cleaner directly at the edges.
Many of our Origins mirrors also take a demister pad, sold separately. A demister pad is wired in, so it needs a qualified electrician.
