TL;DR: Choose shower wall panels if you want a quicker, grout-free, easy-clean shower, and tiles if design choice matters most; many bathrooms use panels in the shower and tiles elsewhere.
- Panels have no grout to scrub and can often go over sound existing tiles.
- A panelled shower can be used after 24 hours; BS 5385-4 recommends at least 14 days for a new tiled shower.
- Tiles need a proper waterproof (tanked) background in a shower.
- A single damaged tile can be swapped; a damaged panel usually means replacing the whole panel.
- Showerwall gives a 30-year guarantee if the panels are registered within 28 days.
- You can buy Cove PVC shower wall panels online at £125 per 2.4m x 1m panel.
If you are replacing a shower, the walls are one of the biggest decisions you will make. The choice of shower wall panels vs tiles affects how long the job takes, how much cleaning you will be doing for years afterwards, and how the finished bathroom looks. Both are good options when they are fitted properly. This guide compares them honestly so you can decide which suits your bathroom, your budget and the way you live.
What are shower wall panels?
Shower wall panels are large, waterproof sheets that cover the walls of a shower or bath area in a few big pieces instead of hundreds of small tiles. The laminate and acrylic panels we supply are from Showerwall, which are manufactured in the UK.
Showerwall makes three main types, and we supply all of them:
- Laminate: a high pressure laminate surface bonded to a moisture-resistant core (Hydrocore, plywood or exterior-grade MDF, depending on the collection), around 10mm thick
- Acrylic: lighter panels in patterns, murals and solid colours
- Compact: a further collection in large 1220mm wide sheets
Panels are 2440mm tall, so most showers can be covered floor to ceiling with no horizontal joins. Laminate panels come either with Proclick edges, a mechanical locking joint that clicks together and leaves almost invisible seams, or square cut with separate joining trims. Finishes range from gloss and matt to textured designs, including marble effects such as Breccia Marble, stone looks and tile-effect patterns.
PVC shower wall panels
PVC panels are a lighter, lower-cost option you can order online. Our Cove PVC shower wall panels are 2.4m x 1m and 10mm thick, waterproof and grout-free, Class 1 fire rated and come with a 10-year guarantee. There are 17 designs, from marble and stone effects to concrete and sparkle finishes, at £125 per panel. Fix them with Cove wall panel adhesive and finish the edges and corners with Cove 10mm trims. A typical alcove shower uses two or three panels.
Shower wall panels vs tiles at a glance
| Shower wall panels | Tiles | |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning | No grout lines; wipe-clean, non-porous surface | Grout lines need regular cleaning and can discolour |
| Installation | Usually quicker; can go over sound existing tiles | Slower; needs a waterproofed background and grouting |
| Time before use | Showerwall adhesive and sealant need 24 hours | BS 5385-4 recommends at least 14 days for a new tiled shower |
| Design choice | Good range, but set sizes and designs | Almost unlimited sizes, shapes, textures and patterns |
| Repairs | A damaged panel usually means replacing the whole panel | A single cracked tile can be swapped if you have spares |
Are shower wall panels better than tiles?
For most showers, panels are the more practical choice: there is no grout to clean, they go up faster, and they can often be fitted over sound existing tiles. Tiles are better if you want a particular look, a feature pattern or the same finish on the walls and floor. Neither keeps water out better on its own; both rely on being fitted correctly.
Cleaning and maintenance
This is where panels have the clearest advantage. With no grout, there are no lines to scrub or to turn grey and mouldy over time. Showerwall describes its surface as non-porous and hygienic, and recommends a mild, non-abrasive cleaner.
Tiles themselves are easy to look after, especially glazed ceramic and porcelain. The work is in the grout. It needs regular cleaning, and in a busy family shower it may eventually need cleaning back hard or replacing. The silicone joints at the tray or bath need checking and renewing with either option.
Installation: time, mess and preparation
Fitting shower wall panels
Panels go up quickly because each one covers a large area in one go. Showerwall says its panels can cut installation time and cost by up to 50% compared with tiling, although the saving on any real job depends on the room.
One of the big benefits is that Showerwall panels can be fitted directly over existing tiles, which avoids hacking tiles off and making good the wall behind. Showerwall's installation guidance is clear about the conditions:
- The existing tiles must be secure and degreased
- Any loose tiles, and any high spots or protruding tiles that could cause warping, must be removed first
- Walls need to be sound, dry, clean and plumb; if they are more than 3mm out, the panels go onto a timber batten frame
- Every cut edge must be sealed, and only Showerwall's own adhesive and sealant should be used, otherwise the guarantee can be invalidated
Once fitted, the adhesive and sealant need 24 hours to cure before the shower is used.
Tiling a shower
Tiling takes longer: the walls are prepared, the tiles are set out and cut, fixed, left to set and then grouted. In a shower, the tiles also need a proper waterproof layer behind them. The Tile Association points out that using a water-resistant adhesive and grout is no substitute for a waterproof tanking system, as set out in BS 5385 Part 4.
After a new tiled shower is finished, BS 5385-4 recommends waiting a minimum of 14 days before putting it into use. If you only have one bathroom, that difference in downtime is worth factoring in.
Are shower wall panels cheaper than tiles?
Often, once fitting is included, but not always. Panels usually take less labour and can avoid stripping old tiles, while the materials can cost more or less than tiles depending on what you choose. A few things tend to decide it:
- Materials: tiles run from budget ceramics to premium porcelain and natural stone, so the tile you choose makes a large difference. Panels have a narrower price range.
- Labour: panels usually take less fitting time than tiling, and there is no grouting.
- Preparation: if panels can go straight over your existing tiles, you avoid the cost of stripping and replastering. Tiling normally means stripping the old tiles and waterproofing the walls.
- Size and layout: a simple alcove shower is quick either way; a large bathroom with lots of cuts, windows and boxing-in takes longer with tiles.
An itemised quote will show exactly how the two compare for your bathroom.
Looks and design
Tiles win on choice. You can pick any size, from mosaics to large-format porcelain slabs, lay them in herringbone or brick bond, run a feature wall, or carry the same tile onto the floor. For a period bathroom, white metro tiles or patterned designs are hard to beat. Browse the ranges from Ca' Pietra and RAK Ceramics to see what is possible, and our guide to porcelain vs ceramic tiles explains the difference between the two.
Panels are ideal if you want a clean, seamless look. A marble-effect panel reads much more like a single slab of stone than a tiled wall broken up by grout lines, and it suits a modern bathroom or en-suite well.
Many bathrooms use both: panels inside the shower where water and cleaning matter most, with tiles on the floor and around the basin.
Longevity and repairs
Showerwall offers a 30-year guarantee against manufacturing defects in a domestic setting, provided the panels are installed as instructed with the recommended accessories. The guarantee drops to 15 years if the product is not registered within 28 days, so register it once the job is done.
Well-fitted tiles on a properly waterproofed wall can also last for many years. Repairs differ: a chipped tile can be cut out and replaced, as long as you have kept a few spares from the same batch, while a damaged panel generally means replacing the whole panel.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put shower wall panels over tiles?
Yes, Showerwall panels can go over existing tiles, as long as the tiles are secure and degreased, any loose or protruding tiles are removed, and the wall is flat and sound. We check this before quoting.
Are shower panels good?
Yes, for most showers. Good-quality panels are waterproof when fitted correctly, quick to clean and long-lasting: Showerwall gives a 30-year guarantee when registered, and Cove PVC panels come with a 10-year guarantee.
Are shower wall panels waterproof?
Showerwall panels are designed to be waterproof, but the system relies on correct fitting: every cut edge sealed and the joints at the tray or bath fully filled with Showerwall's own sealant.
How soon can I use my shower?
With Showerwall panels, 24 hours after fitting. For a newly tiled shower, BS 5385-4 recommends waiting at least 14 days.
Do panels look cheap compared with tiles?
Not when they are chosen and fitted well. Modern laminate panels come in realistic stone, marble and tile-effect finishes. It is best to see them in person and compare them with tiles side by side.
