Pedestal basins, basin stands and console basins
A basin and pedestal is the classic choice. The pedestal supports the basin and hides the waste, and it takes up very little floor space. The Astoria Deco large basin and pedestal shows how much character a simple pedestal can have.
A basin stand uses a metal frame, so the room feels lighter and more open. The trap is on show underneath, so it is worth finishing it properly: the Imperial traditional basin trap comes as a P trap, S trap or bottle trap in the same finishes as the taps.
A console basin gives you the most surface for toiletries. The Regent 1000mm console basin on ceramic legs is a generous piece for a larger bathroom.
Sizing a bathroom basin
Basin widths across the range fall roughly into three groups:
- Cloakroom: compact sizes such as the 530mm Etoile cloakroom basin, for a small WC or a tight corner.
- Medium: around 600mm to 610mm, which suits most family bathrooms.
- Large: from about 640mm up to 720mm, for a main bathroom with space to spare.
Check the projection from the wall as well as the width, and make sure a door or shower screen can still open freely.
Choosing one or three tap holes
Many basins are offered with one or three tap holes, and this needs deciding before you order. One hole takes a mono mixer; three holes take a three-hole mixer, which has a more traditional look. Browse our basin taps and mixers to see which style you prefer, then choose the basin to match.
Which basin is best for a small cloakroom?
A cloakroom basin on a slim stand keeps the floor clear, while a compact vanity unit adds a cupboard. See our bathroom furniture for cloakroom units.
What is the difference between a countertop and an under-counter basin?
A countertop basin, such as the Regent countertop basin, sits proud on top of a worktop. An under-counter basin is fitted beneath the worktop so the surface runs up to the bowl. The worktop is sold separately for both.
Do basins come with a tap and waste?
No. Taps and wastes are sold separately, so you can choose the style and finish you want. Some basins, such as Lichfield, come with an overflow ring in your chosen metal finish.
Can I get help choosing?
