Wall Hung Toilets: How They Work, Sizes and Prices

Lucca Round wall hung toilet in a bright modern bathroom

TL;DR: A wall hung toilet is a toilet pan fixed to a concealed frame inside the wall, with the cistern hidden and the floor clear underneath. Ours cost from £240 to £840 including VAT, and every one comes with a seat.

  • You need three parts: the pan and seat, a concealed frame with cistern, and a flush plate. The frame and flush plate are sold separately.
  • The frame is fixed to the floor and wall and takes the weight, so a properly fitted wall hung toilet is as strong as a floor-standing one.
  • They are easier to clean around and make a small room feel bigger, but cost more to fit than a close coupled toilet.
  • Rimless pans are the easiest to keep clean; our rimless Lucca Round is £309.
  • For a small cloakroom, check the projection: how far the pan sticks out from the finished wall.

A wall hung toilet is a toilet pan that is fixed to the wall rather than standing on the floor. The cistern sits inside the wall on a steel frame, and you flush with a plate of push buttons on the wall.

Below we cover how they work, what you need to buy, pros and cons, the models we sell, sizes for small rooms and fitting. Prices are ours at the time of writing and include VAT.

How does a wall hung toilet work?

There are three parts:

  • The pan and seat. The pan bolts onto two threaded bars on the frame and sits clear of the floor.
  • A concealed frame with cistern. A steel frame fixed to the floor and the wall, with the cistern and pipework built in. It is hidden behind a stud wall, false wall, boxing or bathroom furniture.
  • A flush plate. The push buttons on the wall. It also comes off to give access to the cistern for servicing.

Our wall hung toilet prices are for the pan and seat. Ask us which frame and flush plate suit your toilet and room, and we can include them in your quote.

Pros and cons of a wall hung toilet

Pros Cons
The floor underneath is clear, so it is quick to clean You need a frame, flush plate and boxing as well as the toilet
Seeing more floor makes a small room look bigger More fitting work than a close coupled toilet
The cistern and pipework are hidden The cistern is reached through the flush plate opening rather than lifting a lid
On most frames, the pan height can be set when the frame is fitted Harder to swap for a different style of toilet later

See them all in our wall hung toilets collection. The Carlyon is made to order: allow about a week for chrome hinges and about 4 weeks for other finishes.

Rimless wall hung toilets

A rimless pan has no rim around the inside of the bowl, so there is nowhere for dirt and bacteria to hide and it is quicker to wipe clean. Our rimless wall hung toilet is the Lucca Round, at £309.

Wall hung toilets for small bathrooms and cloakrooms

Look at the projection, which is how far the pan sticks out from the wall; the Carlyon projects 550mm, for example. Remember that the boxing or false wall in front of the frame also takes some depth, so measure from where the finished wall will be, and leave clear space in front of the pan to stand and sit comfortably.

Wall hung vs back to wall vs close coupled

Fitting Most work: frame and boxing Medium: needs a unit or boxing Simplest

Fitting a wall hung toilet

The frame goes in first, fixed to the floor and the wall, with the water supply and waste connected. It is then boxed in with a stud wall or false wall, tiled or panelled, and the pan and flush plate go on last. Frames are made for both solid walls and stud walls.

Because the frame is hidden, it pays to plan it properly at the start, including the pan height and where the flush plate will sit. If you are replacing a close coupled toilet, the boxing will take up some floor depth, so check the room before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Are wall hung toilets strong enough?

Yes, when fitted to a proper frame. The frame is fixed to the floor as well as the wall and takes the load, not the wall tiles.

How much is a wall hung toilet?

Ours cost from £240 for the Kirra to £840 for the Imperial Carlyon, including the seat. Budget separately for the frame, flush plate, boxing and fitting.

Do wall hung toilets come with a seat?

Yes. Every wall hung toilet we sell comes with a seat.

Can a wall hung toilet go on a stud wall?

Yes. Frames are made for stud walls as well as solid walls. Your fitter will choose the right one.

How do you fix a hidden cistern?

Through the flush plate. It comes off to give access to the cistern valves for servicing.
